Everyman Chess, paperback, Englisch, ISBN: 978-1-85744-623-4, 288 Seiten, 2010.
Former US Open Champion Timothy Taylor takes a contemporary look at one of Black's most ambitious counters to 1 e4, the Alekhine Defence. This is a sharp opening in which Black attacks from the very beginning, luring White?s central pawns forward in the expectation of destroying them later on. The Alekhine is a favourite among creative players such as Nigel Short, Vassily Ivanchuk and Hikaru Nakamura.
By studying the most important games and also drawing upon his own experience in the opening, Taylor constructs a practical repertoire for Black, ideal for the modern-day player. All the key tactical and positional ideas for both players are covered, and crucial move-order nuances are highlighted. This book provides everything you need to know to play the Alekhine with confidence.
- A dynamic repertoire for Black
- Provides answers to all of White?s possibilities
- Ideal for improvers, club players and tournament players.
Reviews
This is a fine opening work, and the best repertoire book for the masses that I have ever seen.

...the best book on the Alekhine so far, and after this impressive work, I will no doubt be giving the Alekhine a try. Nigel Davies work cannot even compare while Play the Alekhine is OK, but not as original, and not as well researched as this.

Alekhine Alert can be warmly recommended to players from 1800 to 2400 who are looking for an uncompromising defense to 1.e4.

Wer sich mit dem Gedanken trägt, die Aljechin-Verteidigung in die eigene Praxis einzuführen, erhält mit "Alekhine alert!, a repertoire for Black against 1 e4" ein gutes Hilsmittel an die Hand. (If you want to add the Alekhine Defence to your repertoire then this book will be very helpful.)
Such honesty is rarely seen by any author in any kind of repertoire book. The book as a whole is typical of Taylor: non-traditional, provocative, entertaining, and mostly good. You can disagree with some of his statements and analysis, as well as some of the choices of lines for Black, but for the most part, Taylor is thinking about what is practical for his readers and not necessarily what theory considers the most accurate, particularly if the lines in question would be boring or sterile. If you play the Alekhine as black and you are rated up to around 2200, you should definitely consider this book. If I fell into that category, I would buy it.

An excellent book about an interesting opening. All sound and unsound variations get a chance in the book by Taylor.
