Sergei Tiviakov, geboren 1973 in Krasnodar, war Mitglied der Smyslow-Schule und errang die Jugendweltmeistertitel U16 bzw. U18. Bei den PCA-Weltmeisterschaften erreichte er 1994 die Kandidatenkämpfe, im gleichen Jahr vertrat er auch Russland bei der Schacholympiade. Obwohl er sich seit 1989 als Schachprofi sieht, machte Tiviakov nebenbei seinen Universitätsabschluss in Agrarwissenschaft. Seit 1997 lebt der Großmeister in Groningen und ist mittlerweile in den Niederlanden eingebürgert. Mit seinem neuen Heimatland gewann er 2001 und 2005 die europäische Mannschaftsmeisterschaft und siegte außerdem bei den nationalen Meisterschaften 2006 sowie 2007. Seinen größten Erfolg feierte Tiviakov im Jahr 2008, als er die europäische Einzelmeisterschaft gewann.
